Buda Arts Festival Week: The Weeknights Count as Much as Saturday

There is an octagonal room inside Buda's old city hall where the city council once debated zoning variances and budget line items. It is now the Chambers Theatre, the resident theatre company of Inspired Minds Art Center. From Tuesday, October 13 through Friday, October 16, it hosts most of the evening events of the 2026 Buda Arts Festival.

Saturday, October 17 is the day with the markets, the buskers and the painters on Main Street. Even so, the festival runs six days, from October 12 through 17, and the organizer notes that most of it is free. It started in 2020 as the Buda Plein Air Festival, a one-day painting and music event. Over six years it has grown into a full week, and most of that growth happens on weekday afternoons and evenings within a few blocks of 121 Main Street.

The week before the crowds

Inspired Minds co-founders Sinéad Whiteside and Susan Guerra started the organization in 2020. The festival they built uses the whole week, and the weeknight schedule looks like this:

Day Time Event Where Cost
Mon, Oct 12 From 1:00 pm Festival Fine Art Show opens, a competition and sale with a vote for your favorite artist Inspired Minds Gallery, 121 Main St. Free
Tue, Oct 13 7:30–9:30 pm Poetry Slam Chambers Theatre Free, RSVP to guarantee a seat
Wed, Oct 14 6:00–8:00 pm Artists Mixer, sponsored by the City of Buda Arts Commission Nate's Coffee and Cocktails Free, RSVP
Wed, Oct 14 6:00 pm The Frame Up Film Fest, moving and still images from local filmmakers Chambers Theatre Free, RSVP to guarantee a seat
Thu, Oct 15 6:00–8:00 pm Artists' Happy Hour Meridian Not listed
Fri, Oct 16 7:30 pm Gravy Shakes Improv Chambers Theatre Ticketed

The daytime schedule fills in around these. From Tuesday through Friday, artists paint en plein air, which means outdoors and from life, anywhere in the 78610 zip code. On a lunch break you may come across an easel set up at a corner you pass every day. Muralist Jaz Davis also paints live each day in the front yard of Inspired Minds at 121 Main Street.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the Chambers Theatre hosts free Business of Art Lunch & Learn sessions from 11:30 am to 1 pm. They are sponsored by the Buda Economic Development Corporation, and an RSVP is required:

  • Tuesday: "The Art of A.I. Delegation" with Andres Urrego, founder and CEO of Moil
  • Wednesday: "From Passion to Profit" with Tonya Carlson-Pruitt of Bluebonnet Bookkeeping
  • Thursday: "Hidden Power of Networking" with Renee Barnes

The artist plein air entries are due Friday. Drop-off runs from 1 to 5 pm at the Buda Welcome Center and is closed to the public. That deadline is what turns Saturday into a judging and awards day.

Why the old council chamber matters to the week

The Chambers Theatre is the reason the festival can run on weeknights at all. Before the theatre took over the room, a poetry slam, a film night and an improv show would each have needed a separate home. Now they share one intimate stage in a civic building on the same stretch of Main Street as the gallery, the Welcome Center and the coffee bars.

The theatre is run by director and manager Bridget Gates, who spent twelve years as artistic director of the EmilyAnn Theatre. Its company is made up of local performers, and nearly all of them hold day jobs. Gravy Shakes Improv, a resident troupe of nine local performers who work without a script, holds a monthly Improv Night. October's falls on the Friday of festival week, which makes it the one ticketed weeknight show.

A column in the Hays Free Press, prepared by Inspired Minds, says the theatre's productions draw audiences from along the IH-35 corridor, from Round Rock to San Antonio, and from Hill Country towns like Wimberley and Dripping Springs. If you live here, festival week is an easy chance to see the room before Saturday fills it.

Saturday, October 17, block by block

On Saturday the festival moves out onto the street. The Quick Draw Competition runs from 9:30 to 11:30 am. More than 30 artists paint live outdoors along Main Street, between the Stagecoach House and the Jackson Tyler Morris Memorial Skate Park. The Stagecoach House is a former stagecoach stop and Onion Creek Post Office that later served as the city's Visitor Center, so the competition starts at one of the oldest buildings on the street.

Here is how the rest of the day unfolds:

  1. 9 am to 5 pm: Artisan markets outside the Buda Welcome Center at 303 Main St. and outside Inspired Minds at 121 Main St.
  2. 10 am and 11 am: Story Time for Kids at the Inspired Minds Gallery, sponsored by the Buda Public Library.
  3. 10 am to 4 pm: Live muraling and the potter's wheel at Inspired Minds. Demonstrations run through the day, including stained glass with Kim Fry, oil portrait painting with Shun Y. Xie, pet portrait painting with Stacy Najim and henna art with Khyati Patel.
  4. 11:30 am and 1 pm: Elysian Aerial Performance in the Chambers Theatre.
  5. Noon to 4 pm: The Youth Artists Market in the Inspired Minds North Parking Lot. Vendors are ages 10 to 18 from Buda, Kyle, Austin and nearby communities, selling items such as crocheted goods, paintings, poetry books, jewelry, plants and candles.
  6. 1 to 3 pm: The ticketed First Look Fête at the Buda Welcome Center, with cocktails, small bites and a first chance to buy prize-winning plein air work.
  7. 3 pm: Plein Air and Quick Draw awards at the Buda Welcome Center. Public viewing runs until 5 pm, and the award-winning work is for sale.
  8. 4 pm: People's Choice voting closes for the Festival Fine Art Show. Awards follow at 5 pm.

Main Street businesses also take part. Ellipsis Boutique at 306 S. Main St. #105 is showcasing a local artist. Salon One 12 at 302 S. Main St. #102 and Southern Sky at 310 N. Main St. are hosting art activities during their open hours.

Where the music is

The Saturday busking schedule is organized by address, so you can plan a walk around it:

Location 9:30–11:30 am Noon–2 pm 2:30–4:30 pm
Inspired Minds, 121 Main Guitara Avery Kate Long Prairie
Buda Welcome Center, 303 Main Olivia Lentz Guitara Mako Gottshall
Headway Health / That's So Grandma, 204 S. Main — Richard Watson NYVAI
Southern Sky, 310 N. Main — Blue Bonnet Plague Luv Byte
Nate's Coffee & Cocktails, 306 S. Main — Michael Ingalls Susanna Lee

Verified 2026 parking and street-closure details were not available while this was written. The parking map on the organizer's site still carries a 2023 label. Before you head downtown Saturday morning, check the Inspired Minds festival page for updated maps. The organizer also notes that dates, times and events may change.

Eating between stops

The festival's hosts are also some of Main Street's regular places to eat and drink. Nate's Coffee & Cocktails, at 306 South Main Street since 2016, is a daytime coffee shop that turns into a bar at night. That makes it a good fit for both the Wednesday mixer and Saturday's afternoon sets. Meridian, at 200 N. Main St., serves coffee and cocktails and has live music.

Roxie's, at 308 S. Main St., is the newest of the group. It is a Southern comfort-food restaurant that owner Scott Roberts opened in February, with chicken-fried steak, fried chicken and Southern-style sides on the menu. Community Impact reported that the restaurant is named for Roberts' grandmother, and that its interior and kitchen facade were designed to evoke her home. If this is your first festival since Roxie's opened, it is a natural lunch stop between the morning Quick Draw and the 3 pm awards.

What the same few blocks host next

The festival ends October 17, but downtown's fall calendar keeps going. The City of Buda lists Booda Halloween for Saturday, October 24 at Buda City Park, 204 San Antonio St. At the Chambers Theatre, the Youth Musical Theatre Academy opens Anastasia the Musical on November 19, and A Charlie Brown Christmas Live! runs December 5 through 14.

That December run opens on the same weekend as the 46th annual Budafest, which takes place December 4 through 6 downtown. The lighted parade and fireworks are on Saturday, December 5 at 6:30 pm, and the vendor market runs December 5 and 6.

Watching downtown Buda fill up for a week like this is part of why I love serving this community. If you're thinking about what being close to Main Street could look like for your own plans, whether that's a home a short walk from 121 Main or acreage with room of your own, Elizabeth Ross would be glad to talk it through.
